Charles Herbert Pierrepont, 2nd Earl Manvers (11 August 1778 – 27 October 1860) was an English nobleman and naval officer, the second son of Charles Pierrepont.
He entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman, and was made lieutenant on 10 March 1797 and commander on 11 August. He commanded HMS Kingfisher until being promoted post captain on 24 December 1798,[1] when he took command of HMS Spartiate. Kingfisher was taken over by his quondam first lieutenant, Frederick Maitland.[2] Pierrepont served with Lord Nelson in the Mediterranean theater, but resigned his commission in 1803.
Meanwhile, Charles' elder brother Evelyn died in 1801, and Charles took his seat as Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire. He became a deputy lieutenant of the county in 1803.[1] In 1806, his father was created Earl Manvers, and Charles was styled Viscount Newark. He remained an MP until 1816, when he succeeded to the Earldom.
He married Mary Laetitia, eldest daughter of Anthony Hardolph Eyre of Grove, Nottinghamshire (1784–1860), in 1804. They had four children:
